A16z partner says that the theory that we'll vibe code everything is 'flat wrong'

Anish Acharya, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, recently expressed skepticism about the trend of relying on AI-assisted coding across all business functions. Speaking on the '20VC' podcast, he argued that while software development represents a significant portion of corporate expenses—between 8% and 12%—the potential savings from implementing vibe coding in critical areas like payroll and resource planning are minimal, estimated at around 10%. Acharya cautioned against the dangers of depending on AI for essential coding tasks, likening it to wielding an 'innovation bazooka' inappropriately. He urged companies to focus their AI resources on enhancing their core operations rather than automating back-office functions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) software, which are dominated by major players like Salesforce, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP. The venture capitalist emphasized that while certain business models may suffer in the wake of evolving technologies, the notion that every aspect of business will be automated through coding is fundamentally flawed. His comments come in the context of a recent downturn in software stocks, which affected broader technology markets, sparked by investor anxiety over new AI tools capable of performing clerical tasks in the legal sector. Acharya's perspective aligns with that of fellow investor Vinod Khosla, who previously downplayed fears of an AI bubble, suggesting that metrics such as API call volume are more indicative of AI's actual utility and demand than fluctuating stock prices. He stated, 'What Wall Street tends to do with it, I don't really care. I think it's mostly irrelevant.'
