Tech Download: Nvidia AI chip rivals attract record funding as competition heats up

Nvidia has firmly established itself as a leader in the AI revolution, dominating the market with its powerful chips designed for training and deploying AI models. However, a wave of emerging startups is determined to challenge Nvidia's supremacy, and investors are increasingly backing these new contenders with substantial funding. In 2026, global funding for AI chip startups reached an impressive $8.3 billion, according to Dealroom. With a stable market outlook, projections indicate that this year's investment figures could break records. The surge in funding can be attributed to a shift in focus towards optimizing AI technology for practical applications, known as AI inference. Startups argue that while Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) were initially developed for gaming, they are not ideally suited for AI deployment. This presents an opportunity for innovative architectures that promise significant energy and cost savings. Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky, director at the NATO Innovation Fund, which has invested in the U.K.-based startup Fractile, emphasizes that current GPU structures are not designed for the scale required by inference applications. Despite Nvidia's substantial resources—being the world's most valuable company with extensive cash reserves—it continues to innovate, having acquired assets from AI inference startup Groq for $20 billion and invested $4 billion in two photonics technology firms. The chip giant has also allocated over $18 billion to research and development in its last financial year, which concluded in January 2026. Nonetheless, the enthusiasm for new AI chip technologies remains high among investors. Notable funding rounds in the U.S. include Cerebras Systems, which raised $1 billion in February, and several companies like MatX, Ayar Labs, and Etched securing $500 million each. European startups have also made strides, with Axelera and Olix raising over $200 million this year. Others like Euclyd and Optalysys are gearing up for fundraising rounds exceeding $100 million, alongside Fractile and Arago. Carlos Espinal, managing partner at European VC Seedcamp, highlights that investing in AI infrastructure has transitioned from being a niche to a central focus for many. In parallel, companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are expanding their presence in the U.K., with Anthropic planning a new office for 800 employees and OpenAI establishing a permanent London location for over 500 team members. TSMC recently reported a significant 58% profit increase in the first quarter, exceeding expectations as the demand for AI chips remains robust. In a recent shift, OpenAI decided against renting capacity from a Norwegian data center, opting instead to partner with Microsoft for additional computing resources. Meanwhile, Amazon announced plans to acquire Globalstar for approximately $11.57 billion to enhance its satellite internet ambitions, directly competing with SpaceX. Additionally, Uber has expanded its stake in Delivery Hero, while ASML's stock has faced declines despite positive sales forecasts, likely influenced by heightened expectations around the AI sector and tightening export controls affecting sales to China.
