‘38-hr work week not enough to be successful’: AI chip company CEO slams 9-to-5 mindset among employees

As the conversation around reduced workweeks heats up in the United States, some of the nation's leading executives are questioning the viability of achieving exceptional success within a typical 9-to-5 framework. Andrew Feldman, cofounder and CEO of the $8.1 billion AI chip firm Cerebras, voiced his concerns during a recent podcast, stating that greatness cannot be attained through merely 38 hours of work each week. Feldman expressed disbelief at the idea that one could achieve extraordinary results while maintaining a work-life balance. "The notion that you can build something remarkable by working 38 hours a week is mind-boggling to me. It's simply not true in any aspect of life," he remarked on the 20VC podcast. According to him, while professionals may enjoy a standard 40-hour schedule, they are unlikely to be the innovators behind the next big startup or revolutionary product. He elaborated, "Creating something from the ground up and making it exceptional requires more than just part-time dedication. It isn’t about putting in 30, 40, or even 50 hours a week; it’s about committing every waking moment to the endeavor. Of course, there are sacrifices involved." Feldman emphasized that the key is not solely the number of hours worked, but rather the passion and dedication one brings to their role. "It's about being driven to make a difference, striving to be the best version of yourself, and motivating your team to excel as well." Other prominent figures in the tech industry share his sentiments. Google cofounder Sergey Brin advised employees that a productive week often requires around 60 hours of commitment. Similarly, LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman has stated in a Stanford class that entrepreneurs discussing work-life balance may not be fully dedicated to their success. He noted that truly exceptional founders are those who risk everything for their ventures. Zoom CEO Eric Yuan further asserted that separating work from life is impractical, as he believes "work is life, and life is work." However, there are leaders who recognize the necessity of setting boundaries. For instance, Twilio CEO Khozema Shipchandler allocates eight hours on Saturdays to disconnect from work, highlighting that everyone must make mindful choices regarding their work-life balance.
