On Wednesday, the leaders of major artificial intelligence firms received a letter calling for opposition to Donald Trump's recent 'anti-woke' AI executive order. This directive demands that any AI company seeking federal contracts must navigate two significant requirements. First, they are tasked with demonstrating that their AI systems are 'truth-seeking,' relying on 'historical accuracy, scientific inquiry, and objectivity,' or must indicate when facts are uncertain. Secondly, they must ensure that their models are 'neutral,' a term that lacks clear definition but implies avoiding favoritism towards diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as any form of 'partisan or ideological judgments' in their outputs unless these judgments are explicitly requested by users. In his announcement, Trump emphasized that the U.S. must eliminate perceived liberal biases from AI to secure a lead in the technology race, stating, 'The American people do not want woke Marxist lunacy in the AI models, and neither do other countries.' Senator Ed Markey from Massachusetts criticized this stance, arguing that it reflects a reliance on emotion rather than factual basis. He pointed out that claims of AI being 'woke' stem from a few anecdotal instances and highlighted that Trump's order fails to address substantial evidence contradicting the notion of biased AI. Markey also referenced a notable admission from Elon Musk, who heads xAI, stating that their AI chatbot Grok was deliberately designed to appeal to right-leaning perspectives. In his correspondence with tech leaders, Markey emphasized the irony of the situation, noting that had a competitor's AI claimed to be trained to favor left-leaning views, it would have provoked outrage and inquiries from congressional Republicans. 'Yet, here they remain silent,' he concluded.
