Is AI causing layoffs? This report says it's complicated.

Recent research challenges the notion that artificial intelligence is leading to widespread layoffs in the workforce. Contrary to fears of a white-collar job crisis, companies that are investing heavily in AI are actually increasing their hiring rates, particularly in entry-level positions, which are often perceived as most vulnerable to automation. The study, released by tech startups Ramp and Revelio Labs, analyzed workforce data from 22,000 U.S. firms alongside their AI expenditures from January 2021 to February 2026. It revealed that firms making significant investments in AI typically experienced growth in their employee counts following the implementation of the technology. However, it's important to note that these AI frontrunners are generally larger companies, frequently supported by venture capital, and are in rapid growth phases. Notably, the hiring surge was most pronounced in the information sector, which encompasses internet, media, and tech-related businesses. This data contradicts the narrative that AI is a primary driver of mass layoffs. The authors of the study urged readers to be skeptical of claims linking layoffs directly to AI. Although some firms have cited AI as a contributing factor to their workforce reductions, recent months have seen a decline in alarmist rhetoric regarding mass job losses. Tech leaders are increasingly voicing concerns over the misuse of AI as a scapegoat for job cuts. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, criticized executives who attribute layoffs to AI as being “lazy” and “scaring people.” Similarly, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, indicated in May that he does not foresee the drastic job losses some in the industry have suggested. As discussions around AI continue, particularly among younger generations who fear job displacement, the study highlights positive trends. It found that companies categorized as high-intensity AI adopters—those spending about $34 per employee monthly—saw a 10.2% increase in their workforce over two years, with entry-level positions rising by 12%. Despite these promising figures, the study also pointed out a phenomenon known as the “productivity paradox.” While workers are completing tasks more quickly due to AI, these efficiency improvements have not consistently led to increased overall productivity or profitability for many businesses. The authors concluded with a message for young job seekers: when choosing between similar companies, opting for those that are innovatively using AI could be beneficial for career prospects.
