AI isn't replacing women in tech, it’s fast-tracking them to the C-suite

Recent findings reveal that artificial intelligence (AI) is acting as a significant career booster for women in the technology sector, challenging the conventional narrative that automation threatens jobs. A report from ANSR in partnership with Talent500 highlights how AI is facilitating faster career growth, broadening access to leadership positions, and creating new opportunities across various industries. The report emerges amid global apprehensions regarding job displacement, presenting AI as a transformative force in the workplace. "AI is becoming central to value creation rather than merely an auxiliary tool," the report states, emphasizing that women are not only engaging with AI but also shaping its evolution and using it as a springboard for their careers. According to the survey, a notable 64% of women indicated that AI has expedited their ascent to senior roles, while 69% acknowledged that it has unlocked new career avenues. These advancements extend beyond conventional tech jobs; women are increasingly stepping into roles in product operations, governance, and AI-driven transformations. The report underscores that AI is now recognized as a significant contributor to career growth and professional mobility. Additionally, the engagement of women with AI in their work environments is evident, with nearly half of the workforce incorporating AI into their daily tasks, particularly in coding, research, and data analysis. The desire for deeper involvement in AI-focused positions is strong among women, with an impressive 95% expressing interest in transitioning to such roles if appropriate support is provided, and 58% showing a clear willingness. Monica Jamwal, Managing Director of Talent Solutions at ANSR & Talent500, remarked on the report’s implications, stating, "Competence is becoming the key differentiator in leadership, and AI proficiency is crucial for women in tech to scale their careers." The report also identifies Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as vital players in promoting gender equity within the industry. It notes that these centers are intentionally designed to enhance women's participation through transparent role structures, defined advancement criteria, and hybrid work models. In India, GCCs exhibit relatively better gender representation, with women occupying approximately 6–17% of the nearly 6,500 leadership roles available. However, a significant challenge persists, as there is a 40% decrease in representation from entry-level to senior leadership roles. Despite this, optimism remains high regarding AI-enhanced career opportunities, with about 65% of women expressing confidence about their future prospects in this area. Beyond enhancing career mobility, AI is changing how women allocate their time and manage productivity. Over 85% reported that AI assists them in reclaiming time, enabling a shift from routine administrative duties to more impactful work. This so-called "time dividend" is being reinvested into professional growth and well-being, further positioning AI as a facilitator rather than a replacement in the workforce. Nevertheless, significant barriers must be addressed, as representation at senior levels remains low—dropping from 29% at the entry level to just 14% in executive roles. The report attributes this disparity to systemic challenges and calls for more transparent advancement pathways and robust sponsorship initiatives.
