Bengaluru's AGNIT Semiconductors is on the brink of a significant breakthrough as it anticipates several pilot projects for its gallium nitride (GaN) chips to transition into mass production within the next year. This optimistic outlook comes as defence clients conclude field trials and seek procurement from military forces. The startup is collaborating with various clients across applications, including military radars, electronic warfare systems, drone jammers, radio communications, and satellite technologies. According to CEO and co-founder Hareesh Chandrasekar, initial results from these pilot programs have been promising, suggesting a strong potential for scaling up production. "Currently, we have multiple pilot initiatives in progress, with several showing solid prospects for transitioning into volume manufacturing over the next twelve months," Chandrasekar shared in an interview. He indicated that the company is looking to ramp up production to between 5,000 and 10,000 chips in the next six to nine months. The demand from the defence sector has been a driving force for AGNIT's growth. Established in 2019, AGNIT specializes in GaN semiconductor technology, which excels in managing higher power levels and operating at elevated frequencies compared to traditional silicon components. This capability makes GaN particularly suitable for advanced radar systems and electronic warfare applications that require compact and energy-efficient solutions. AGNIT not only manufactures GaN wafers and epitaxial structures but also produces radio-frequency devices and power amplifiers. These components are essential for testing the technology’s effectiveness in real-world scenarios. "The defence sector's demand is currently the strongest, especially for advanced military radars and electronic warfare systems, which necessitate high-performance components that GaN technology delivers," Chandrasekar explained. Initially, AGNIT explored the potential for manufacturing electric vehicle components but has since shifted its focus toward strategic sectors that promise more immediate demand for GaN technology. The company has also partnered with the Ministry of Defence to develop next-generation wireless transmitters, which play a crucial role in radar and electronic warfare systems by generating high-frequency signals for detection and disruption purposes. Chandrasekar noted, "Modern systems require transmitters that can sustain high power and frequencies while performing optimally in challenging conditions. GaN technology overcomes many limitations faced by traditional components, enhancing both efficiency and size." As India’s first vertically integrated GaN semiconductor startup, AGNIT is committed to managing various production stages, from material development to device fabrication. Of the two chips currently in scaling, one is entirely produced in India, while the other is fabricated at an external foundry based on AGNIT’s design. Recently, the company invested Rs 3 crore in establishing a new testing laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, which will facilitate in-house validation and reliability testing of its components. This facility is expected to enhance AGNIT’s capabilities in supporting defence communications and next-generation wireless networks. In a recent funding round, AGNIT secured $2.6 million, led by Shastra VC, with participation from existing investors such as 3one4 Capital and Zephyr Peacock. This funding will bolster product development efforts and help convert pilot programs into commercial applications. Chandrasekar emphasized that the company is currently focused on execution rather than seeking additional funding, aiming to navigate successfully from development to scaled deployments.
