Indeed CEO says the aging labor market is a way bigger issue than AI

Hisayuki "Deko" Idekoba, the CEO of Indeed and parent company Recruit Holdings, highlighted a pivotal issue during Semafor's World Economy Summit: the aging workforce is a more pressing concern than the rise of artificial intelligence. Idekoba pointed out that developed nations, including those in Europe and the United States, are experiencing significant demographic shifts. He stated, "What we are witnessing is a substantial change in the labor market due to an aging population." He emphasized that the struggle to replace retiring workers will have a far greater impact than the effects of AI on employment. According to Indeed's research, the United States is projected to see a decline of 20 million workers over the next five decades, equating to a reduction of about 5%. Idekoba noted that a staggering 80% of this decrease is attributed to an aging demographic, with only 20% linked to job displacement caused by AI. Idekoba also expressed concern that Western nations, particularly the US, have yet to fully confront the reality of a shrinking labor market, which is coinciding with a growing number of unfilled roles in skilled trades. Drawing a comparison to Japan, where the labor force has remained stable despite a low birth rate due to increased female workforce participation, he pointed out that the US lacks a similar reservoir of untapped labor. "In the US, as well as in Germany and the UK, the pace of this issue is quickening," Idekoba remarked. He stressed the urgency of addressing the growing number of vacancies in essential sectors like construction, plumbing, healthcare, and electrical work. "These are critical jobs, yet we currently do not have a sufficient pipeline of workers to meet demand," he added. The CEO warned that these labor shortages could lead to significant inconveniences for consumers. "I don’t want to wait two months to fix a water leak, but that’s the reality we are facing in the US today," Idekoba concluded, underscoring the immediate need for solutions to this impending crisis.
