Agility Robotics, the innovative company behind the humanoid robot Digit, announced its plans to go public through a merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI, a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC). This transaction values Agility at around $2.5 billion, marking a significant milestone as it becomes the first humanoid robotics firm to list on a U.S. exchange. Founded in 2015 as a spin-off from Oregon State University, Agility aims to redefine the humanoid robotics landscape. Jonathan Hurst, Agility's co-founder and chief robot officer, expressed optimism about the timing of this move, stating, "We're hitting now as a first mover, which is really important, and we want to be defining the humanoid industry." The merger is anticipated to yield over $600 million in gross proceeds, which will be instrumental in fulfilling existing orders and enhancing the production of their next humanoid model, Digit v5. This latest version is designed to excel in repetitive physical tasks, such as transporting heavy items and sorting goods. Agility has already integrated its robots into nine customer facilities, including major players like Amazon and Toyota. The decision to pursue a SPAC route was influenced by the desire to collaborate with Michael Klein, a seasoned financier whose expertise complements Agility's technical strengths. Klein has a notable track record in guiding companies like Lucid Motors and Oklo through their public offerings. As the humanoid robotics sector evolves, Agility is focused on making their robots safe for operation in human environments. Hurst emphasized that the Digit v5 will be engineered to navigate existing spaces without the need for additional safety barriers, which is a significant leap forward in safety standards. The company is also partnering with Nvidia to implement advanced safety features, including the newly announced Halos for Robotics system. As Agility prepares for this pivotal step, the landscape of humanoid robotics is also changing, with increased interest from global competitors. In 2022, Chinese firms dominated the market, accounting for approximately 90% of humanoid robot shipments, underscoring the competitive nature of this rapidly advancing industry.
