AgentMail raises $6M to build an email service for AI agents

In recent years, the landscape of AI agents has transformed dramatically. Initially, these digital assistants were limited to basic chatbot functionalities, sparking curiosity but also skepticism about their reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness. Fast forward to today, and AI agents are now utilized for a wide array of tasks, from debugging software and crafting marketing campaigns to managing calendars and scheduling meetings. This evolution gained momentum earlier this year with the launch of OpenClaw, which enabled users to run personalized AI agents continuously. The tech community anticipates that AI agents may soon rival the number of actual users online, automating numerous tasks across various sectors. Recognizing this potential, San Francisco-based startup AgentMail has developed an innovative email service tailored specifically for AI agents. The platform offers an API that allows these agents to maintain their own email inboxes, facilitating two-way communication, threading, labeling, searching, and replying. On Tuesday, AgentMail announced it successfully raised $6 million in seed funding, led by General Catalyst and supported by notable investors including Y Combinator, Phosphor Capital, and industry leaders like Paul Graham and Dharmesh Shah, CTO of HubSpot. In conjunction with this funding, the company introduced an onboarding API that enables AI agents to create their own email inboxes seamlessly. Co-founder and CEO Haakam Aujla explained that AgentMail was designed to provide AI agents with an inbox experience akin to that of human users on platforms like Gmail or Outlook, minus the cumbersome user interface elements. Aujla emphasized that while the platform is user-friendly for humans, the focus is on enabling AI agents to interact via straightforward API calls instead of navigating through a graphical interface. Since its inception during Y Combinator’s Summer 2025 batch, AgentMail has attracted a significant user base, boasting tens of thousands of human users and hundreds of thousands of AI agent users, in addition to over 500 B2B customers. The initial growth was gradual, but following the success of OpenClaw, AgentMail experienced a surge in user registrations, witnessing a tripling of their count in just one week. Despite the increasing demand, providing email access to AI agents raises concerns about potential misuse. To mitigate this, AgentMail has implemented several safeguards, including limiting agent inboxes to a maximum of 10 emails per day unless authenticated by a human and monitoring for unusual activity. Aujla further articulated AgentMail's vision to establish an identity layer for AI agents, allowing them to leverage email as a digital identity tool. This innovative approach aims to utilize existing email protocols, enabling agents to interface with various software services already integrated into the digital landscape.
