Adobe launches AI assistants for Express and Photoshop

Adobe has introduced groundbreaking AI assistants within its Creative Cloud suite, specifically for the Express and Photoshop applications, aimed at revolutionizing image creation and editing. In a departure from traditional sidebar assistants, Adobe has developed a unique mode for Express that allows users to generate new images and designs using text prompts. This feature enables users to switch to assistant mode for AI-driven creativity and then revert to conventional editing tools, streamlining the creative process. On the other hand, the new Photoshop assistant, currently in closed beta testing, operates from the sidebar. According to Adobe, this assistant is designed to recognize various layers and can facilitate tasks such as automatic object selection and mask creation. Users can also leverage the assistant to handle repetitive chores, including background removal and color adjustments. Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of generative AI, shared insights with TechCrunch, explaining that the decision to introduce a distinct mode for Express was focused on students and professionals who utilize the app. The goal is to enable users to accomplish their creative visions without reverting to the traditional interface. Costin emphasized, "We believe that this dual-mode approach, merging accessibility with control, will enhance user experience." Furthermore, Adobe is piloting an innovative assistant dubbed “Project Moonlight,” which aims to unify various Adobe tools and link to a creator’s social media to better grasp their stylistic preferences. This initiative is still in its early developmental phase and is currently in private beta. To elevate user capabilities further, Adobe is also investigating the integration of Adobe Express with ChatGPT using OpenAI’s app integrations API, allowing users to craft designs directly within ChatGPT. Additionally, the company has rolled out new AI features across its Creative Cloud applications. Photoshop users can now select from third-party models, such as Google’s Gemini 2.5 flash and Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 Kontext, for their generative fill needs, enhancing object removal and image expansion. In a similar vein, Premiere Pro will soon feature an AI-powered object mask, simplifying the identification and selection of objects or individuals for effect application or color adjustments.
