In a surprising turnaround, Adobe has announced that it will not be discontinuing its popular 2D animation software, Animate. Initially, the company had planned to halt subscriptions to Animate starting March 1, citing that the software had 'served its purpose.' This decision would have allowed existing users to maintain their licenses until March 1, 2027, while businesses had until March 1, 2029, to continue using it. However, the backlash from the animation community was swift and intense. Users were alarmed to learn that they would also lose access to their Animate files and project data by the 2027 deadline. Following the uproar, Adobe quickly reassessed its position and on Tuesday night, issued a new statement clarifying its commitment to the software. In a public announcement, Adobe stated, "We are not discontinuing or removing access to Adobe Animate. Animate will continue to be available for both current and new customers, and we will ensure you continue to have access to your content." This new direction means that there will no longer be a deadline for the availability of Animate, alleviating concerns for its users. The company confirmed that while Animate will still receive technical support, security updates, and bug fixes, there will be no new feature additions. Adobe acknowledged that their previous announcement 'did not meet our standards and caused a lot of confusion and angst.' Community director Mike Chambers reassured users on Reddit, emphasizing that if the company ever does decide to discontinue Animate, they will collaborate closely with the community to ensure a smooth transition and long-term access to their content.
