Weather-monitoring firm hangs dark cloud over customers’ heads by forcing new app

AcuRite, a prominent name in weather-monitoring technology, is compelling its device users to transition to a new companion app by May 30, leading to dissatisfaction among many loyal customers. The company, known for its weather stations, indoor thermometers, and rain gauges, initiated notifications last month informing users that they would need to utilize the AcuRite Now app, available on both iOS and Android. Originally launched in June 2025 to manage the new AcuRite Optimus weather station, AcuRite Now is set to replace the older My AcuRite app, which had been in use since 2016. The company has announced that the My AcuRite app will soon be discontinued, leaving AcuRite Now as the sole official app for controlling AcuRite's range of devices. The My AcuRite website states, "To ensure uninterrupted access to your weather data and to unlock even more capabilities, all users should transition to AcuRite NOW before May 30th, 2026." AcuRite Now is designed to integrate with thousands of products within Tuya’s SmartLife IoT ecosystem, offering compatibility with third-party devices like fans, thermostats, and various smart home gadgets. However, many users have expressed their frustration regarding the switch, claiming that AcuRite Now does not match the functionality of its predecessor. Complaints have surfaced online about the inability to rename multiple temperature sensors and challenges in uploading data to weather services, as well as the app's limitation of reporting temperatures only in whole numbers. In response to these concerns, AcuRite's support page indicated that enhancements are anticipated, including the ability to organize on-screen sensors and rename multiple sensors in AcuRite Now. There is also a possibility of a desktop version being introduced in the near future. A notable feature that My AcuRite offered was data sharing with Weather Underground, which provided real-time weather updates. While AcuRite Now maintains this capability, it comes at a cost—a subscription fee starting at $2 per month for the AcuRite Now+ service, which offers additional data storage, allowing users to keep 365 days of history compared to the 30 days available for free users.
