AcuRite, known for its innovative weather-monitoring devices, is set to discontinue its popular My AcuRite app due to outdated technology, according to Jeff Bovee, the company's VP of product development. The decision, announced earlier this month, will take effect after May 30, after which users will need to transition to the newly launched AcuRite NOW app, which debuted in June 2025. This shift has left many long-time users disappointed, primarily because the new app lacks several features that fans of My AcuRite had come to rely on. For instance, AcuRite NOW does not allow users to rename multiple temperature sensors, organize on-screen displays, or report temperatures in decimal format. AcuRite has indicated that it is working on adding some of these functionalities in the future. In an interview, Bovee elaborated on the reasoning behind the move, emphasizing that AcuRite NOW is built on a more advanced cloud-connected platform, offering greater flexibility. He contrasted this with the My AcuRite app, which was primarily a weather-station cloud dashboard. The new app is designed to serve as a more comprehensive connected-device platform. According to Bovee, while My AcuRite provided access to weather data through both the app and web, its underlying technology was limiting for future app development and integration with modern smart home devices. AcuRite NOW, on the other hand, boasts a more robust architecture that facilitates advancements such as improved mobile app features, cloud-based updates, and enhanced user account management. Additionally, AcuRite NOW integrates with Tuya's SmartLife IoT ecosystem, catering to users with other smart devices. However, it is important to note that this new app requires a subscription to share data with the real-time weather service Weather Underground, a feature that was previously available for free through My AcuRite. Bovee maintains that this upgrade will ultimately provide superior support for data sharing, despite the financial implications for AcuRite.
