Microsoft headquarters go into lockdown after activists take over Brad Smith’s office

A dramatic scene unfolded at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters on Monday when a group of activists stormed the building, specifically targeting President Brad Smith's office in Building 34. This bold move led to a temporary lockdown as the demonstrators, part of the 'No Azure for Apartheid' campaign, live-streamed their protest on Twitch. They displayed banners and chanted slogans such as, 'Brad Smith, you can’t hide, you’re supporting genocide!' while issuing a mock legal summons accusing Smith of 'crimes against humanity.' TechCrunch has reached out to Microsoft for further details regarding the incident. Reports from The Verge indicate that the protest included both current Microsoft employees and individuals dismissed for prior activism, highlighting a growing discontent within the workforce. This escalation comes after months of protests against Microsoft's cloud contracts with Israel, which have been the focus of recent demonstrations at the company's headquarters. A recent investigation by The Guardian revealed troubling information about how Israel utilizes Microsoft’s services to manage vast amounts of data from calls made by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. The approach taken by these activists is reminiscent of tactics used by Google employees over a year ago. In April 2024, nine Google workers led coordinated protests across offices in New York and California, with five of them occupying the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian for an extended period. They made their demands clear on his whiteboard while wearing shirts that read 'Googler against genocide.' These Google protests were also live-streamed on Twitch, and shortly after, 28 employees involved were terminated. The current situation at Microsoft underscores the mounting pressure on tech companies to address ethical concerns linked to their contracts and the implications of their services on global issues.
