In a significant development, the ACLU has announced a settlement with the federal government regarding a lawsuit over the denial of grant applications that were previously blocked under an now-invalidated policy. This agreement, still pending judicial approval, mandates that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) resume evaluations of grants that were halted due to ideological biases. While this settlement does not guarantee funding for the grants, it allows them to undergo the standard peer review process. The grants in question were initially rejected without any review due to ideological conflicts with the policies of the Trump administration, which have since been deemed arbitrary and in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act by the courts, including an affirmation from the Supreme Court. The Trump administration had identified various categories of research it deemed unsupported, which included topics like climate change, diversity and inclusion, pandemic preparedness, and gender ideology. Consequently, federal agencies began to cancel grants associated with these sensitive subjects, stalling the review of numerous applications. This led to the cancellation of vital research funding, affecting studies ranging from antiviral drug development to examining prostate cancer rates among African American populations. Researchers and advocacy organizations whose funding was impacted took legal action, resulting in two interconnected lawsuits: one for those who lost existing funding and another for those whose applications were rejected outright.
