AI data center boom could be bad news for other infrastructure projects

The rapid expansion of data center construction is set to impact the progress of essential infrastructure projects like roads and bridges, as highlighted by a recent report from Bloomberg. In 2025, state and local governments are expected to issue a historic volume of debt for the second consecutive year, with projections estimating around $600 billion in sales for upcoming projects. This capital is largely intended for infrastructure improvements. Simultaneously, data from the Census Bureau indicates that private investment in data centers has surged to an annualized rate exceeding $41 billion, a figure that rivals the spending by state and local governments on transportation initiatives. This surge in construction is likely to create fierce competition for available labor, particularly as the industry grapples with labor shortages exacerbated by retirements and stricter immigration policies. Andrew Anagnost, the CEO of Autodesk, a leading architecture and design software company, expressed concern over these developments, stating, "There’s absolutely no doubt that data center construction sucks resources from other projects." Anagnost further emphasized that many infrastructure projects may not progress as swiftly as anticipated due to these competing demands for labor and resources.
