An Accel VC says the vibe coding market is big enough for Cursor and Claude Code

The competitive landscape of AI-assisted coding is not as dire as it may seem, according to Miles Clements, a partner at Accel Ventures. Speaking on the latest episode of the "20VC" podcast, Clements expressed confidence that both Cursor and Anthropic's Claude Code can thrive in this expanding market. Clements pointed out that following the recent release of Anthropic's Opus 4.6 model, some developers have announced on social media their switch from Cursor to Claude Code. However, Clements argues that the coding industry is growing rapidly, and this trend does not necessarily equate to one company's success coming at the expense of another. Cursor, a startup launched in 2022, achieved a valuation of $29.3 billion late last year after Accel led its $2.3 billion Series D funding round. Clements praised Claude Code as an exceptional product but emphasized that its advancements do not diminish Cursor's position. He attributed this to two key factors: the influx of new users entering the software development field and the increasing consumption rates among existing customers. To illustrate the evolving landscape, Clements likened the coding experience to various modes of transportation: writing code by hand is like walking, using Cursor is akin to driving a car, while utilizing Claude Code in an existing repository is comparable to flying in an airplane, and using it in a new repository resembles launching a rocket. In a contrasting viewpoint, Chamath Palihapitiya, another venture capitalist, recently stated that Cursor has become one of his firm's significant AI expenses and suggested migrating to Claude Code due to cost efficiency. Additionally, Jerry Murdock of Insight Partners criticized Cursor's current standing in the market, claiming it lags behind competitors. Clements, however, defended Cursor and challenged the notion that it is obsolete, questioning the metrics used to judge its performance. He argued that dismissing a company without substantial evidence is unfounded. As the AI coding market continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these companies will navigate the competitive landscape.
