Accel and Prosus have officially announced their inaugural cohort of six startups in India, selecting ventures they describe as pioneering and 'off-the-map.' These startups are tackling complex issues in sectors such as healthcare, climate change, space exploration, and longevity, showcasing a commitment to science-driven initiatives that often face long development timelines and unpredictable market pathways. The selection process was highly competitive, with over 2,000 applications submitted. The chosen startups reflect a departure from typical industry investments, focusing instead on groundbreaking ideas that present unique challenges and opportunities for innovation. Announced in October, the program aims to provide substantial support to these early-stage companies. Accel and Prosus are co-investing in each startup, with investment amounts ranging between $500,000 and $2 million. Notably, Prosus will match Accel’s investment, fostering a collaborative funding approach. The investment structure is designed to minimize early equity dilution for founders, allowing for a portion of the capital to be deferred, which means founders can retain more ownership until a later stage. According to Pratik Agarwal, a partner at Accel, these startups require more than just financial backing; they need time to achieve significant breakthroughs. Similarly, Ashutosh Sharma, head of the India ecosystem at Prosus, noted that the path for these companies is often non-linear, with success contingent on hitting crucial technical milestones rather than following a predictable growth trajectory.
