Altman and Amodei share a moment of awkwardness at India’s big AI summit

During the India AI Impact Summit, what should have been a display of unity among tech leaders turned into an awkward moment. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged attendees to join hands in solidarity, all the executives on stage complied—except for Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, who noticeably kept their hands apart. As the heads of two leading companies in the competitive AI landscape, Altman and Amodei's rivalry is well-known and has escalated recently. Following OpenAI's announcement of introducing advertisements to ChatGPT, Anthropic responded with a series of ads during the Super Bowl that criticized OpenAI's approach by stating they would never incorporate ads into their AI, Claude. In a pointed rebuttal, Altman labeled Anthropic as “dishonest” and “authoritarian,” asserting that OpenAI would never implement advertisements in the manner described by Anthropic, emphasizing their awareness of user expectations. Both leaders were present in New Delhi this week for the summit, which showcased a range of new AI investments, products, and innovations. OpenAI announced plans to establish two new offices in India and collaborate with IT powerhouse TCS, while also rolling out tools aimed at enhancing higher education. In parallel, Anthropic revealed its own office in India and partnered with Infosys to facilitate the deployment of its AI technologies, marking a significant step in the ongoing evolution of AI in the region.
