In a groundbreaking theoretical exploration published in Current Biology, researchers from the University of Sussex and Lund University propose a fascinating idea about the evolution of vertebrate eyes. They suggest that our ancient ancestors, after losing their original eyes, may have adapted by reshaping a single central eye into two distinct visual organs. This theory challenges the notion that vertebrate eyes evolved directly from the paired eyes of early bilaterians. Instead, it posits that vertebrate eyes were 'reinvented' from a solitary light-sensitive organ that took a unique evolutionary path. Dan-Eric Nilsson, a prominent expert in eye evolution and the study's senior author, highlights a crucial distinction: vertebrate eyes differ fundamentally from the lateral eyes found in other animal groups. The primary difference lies in the type of photoreceptors. Vertebrate eyes utilize ciliary photoreceptors, while other creatures, such as arthropods and cephalopods, rely on rhabdomeric ones. To grasp this concept, it's important to understand the two main classes of light-sensitive cells. Rhabdomeric photoreceptors are common in invertebrates, primarily facilitating vision, whereas ciliary cells play a role in regulating internal biological rhythms and do not directly contribute to image formation. Vertebrates, however, merge both photoreceptors within their retinas. In this complex structure, ciliary photoreceptors—rods and cones—enable image-forming vision, while the rhabdomeric elements monitor light levels and transmit visual information to the brain. This intriguing synthesis sheds new light on the evolutionary journey of vertebrate vision, suggesting a more intricate history than previously understood.
