Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 review: The quintessential smartwatch is here

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Watch 8, a significant evolution in smartwatch technology that goes beyond mere annual updates. Designed with the modern user in mind, this device is lighter, more vibrant, and smarter, making it an essential companion for daily activities. With a price tag of ₹32,999 for the 40mm version and ₹35,999 for the 44mm variant, it successfully merges high-end aesthetics with practical functionality. When you first wear the Galaxy Watch 8, its comfort is immediately apparent. The newly redesigned case hugs the wrist more closely while reducing thickness for an enhanced feel. Constructed from Armour Aluminium, the frame is both elegant and durable. Its lighter weight allows for all-day wear, whether during workouts, in the shower, or while sleeping. The innovative Dynamic Lugs improve the connection of the straps, providing better fit and stability during physical activities. Compared to its predecessors, this model offers a noticeably refined experience, maintaining a minimalist design that is distinctly Samsung. The display of the Galaxy Watch 8, while retaining its 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch sizes for the two models, features a remarkable brightness upgrade to 3,000 nits. This increase makes the screen exceptionally easy to read, even in direct sunlight. The AMOLED technology ensures deep blacks and vibrant colors, while thinner bezels contribute to a sleek and contemporary look. Navigating the interface is a joy, thanks to excellent touch sensitivity and satisfying vibration feedback. Powered by One UI 8 Watch atop Wear OS 6, the smartwatch showcases a level of intelligence that matches its design. The introduction of the Now Bar offers quick access to essential tasks such as timers and workouts, and redesigned app cards provide a smooth notification experience. A standout feature is the integration of Google Gemini, which allows users to control various functions—like starting workouts or searching for restaurants—using natural voice commands without needing their phone. Internally, the Galaxy Watch 8 is driven by Samsung's Exynos W1000 processor, built on a 3nm architecture, accompanied by 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Users will find that performance is swift and responsive, whether managing apps, syncing music, or tracking fitness activities. The inclusion of dual-frequency GPS (L1 + L5) enhances navigation accuracy, particularly in urban areas and on trails. When it comes to health and fitness, Samsung maintains its lead in the Android market. The Watch 8 introduces a Running Coach feature that assesses your fitness level after a brief run and customizes a training plan accordingly. New functionalities include sleep apnea detection and an innovative antioxidant index that gauges dietary health through carotenoid levels in your thumb. Alongside these features, it continues to offer essential health tracking tools, including heart rate monitoring, ECG, body composition analysis, stress tracking, sleep monitoring, and automatic workout detection. However, users will need a Samsung phone to calibrate the ECG and blood pressure readings. Battery life has traditionally been a challenge for Samsung, but improvements in the 325mAh cell are evident. Users can expect up to two days of use, including sleep tracking and workouts, or around 30 hours with the always-on display activated. While it may not be a long-distance runner, the battery performance is reliable. However, charging remains slower than preferred, taking approximately 90 minutes for a full charge. In conclusion, the Galaxy Watch 8 doesn’t set out to reinvent the smartwatch; instead, it refines what has already been established. With its polished design, stunning display, and swift operation, it excels in health tracking and offers improved battery life. This model represents a significant step forward for Samsung, making it an ideal upgrade for anyone still using a Galaxy Watch 5 or earlier. The Galaxy Watch 8 is practical, balanced, and beautifully crafted, making it a device that users will want to wear daily.
