In a remarkable week for the aerospace industry, two of the leading rocket manufacturers outside of SpaceX have celebrated significant achievements. Arianespace successfully launched its Ariane 6 rocket from French Guiana on Tuesday night, marking its third flight with the deployment of a European weather satellite. Meanwhile, United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket completed its third launch from Florida, carrying out a mission for the U.S. military. These launches represent a pivotal moment in the evolution of large-scale rocketry in the Western world, with Ariane 6 and Vulcan joining Blue Origin's New Glenn as the three major rockets to achieve their initial orbital flights in the past two years. Notably, Ariane 6 claimed the title for reaching its third orbital flight first, achieving this milestone just 13 months after its debut. In contrast, Vulcan took over 19 months to reach this point, while New Glenn has only completed one flight. SpaceX's Super Heavy/Starship, which has conducted nine test flights, is still striving to reach orbit. In addition to these developments, Geespace, a private Chinese satellite firm, successfully launched 11 new satellites into orbit on August 13 as part of its expanding Internet of Things constellation. This mission utilized the solid-fueled Jielong 3 rocket, which took off from an ocean platform near Rizhao, a city in eastern China's Shandong province. The Jielong 3 rocket's fourth stage later reentered the atmosphere, creating a spectacular fireball that was initially mistaken for a meteor by many residents in Spain. However, the bright streak was ultimately identified as debris from the rocket, which disintegrated upon reentry, with any surviving fragments likely falling into the Mediterranean Sea.
