Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, has hailed Google's recent antitrust settlement as a significant step forward for Android's commitment to being an open platform. This agreement, reached on Tuesday, outlines Google's plans to implement reforms in its Android app store, which include reducing fees and fostering increased competition. The proposal, pending judicial approval, will empower Android app developers to direct users to alternative payment options both within their apps and through external links. Additionally, it establishes a cap on the fees Google can impose on developers, set at either 9% or 20%, depending on the nature of the transaction. In a post on the social media platform X, Sameer Samat, the president of the Android Ecosystem at Google, emphasized that these changes prioritize expanding developer options, lowering costs, and boosting competition, all while ensuring user safety. If the court approves the agreement, it will effectively conclude ongoing antitrust disputes. Sweeney expressed strong support for the proposal, describing it as "awesome," and he contrasted it with Apple's approach, which he criticized for attempting to restrict competing app stores and limiting payment options. Apple has maintained that its policies are designed to safeguard consumers and ensure the security of its App Store. Notably, Apple recently reported a record revenue of $28.75 billion from its Services division, which includes the App Store, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. Epic Games has been at the forefront of legal challenges against both Google and Apple, alleging that their app store ecosystems are anti-competitive, impose excessive fees, and prioritize their own payment systems. While Epic's case against Apple resulted in a favorable outcome for the latter, it mandated changes to allow for alternative payment methods. Conversely, Google faced a setback in July when a jury ruled that it had hindered competition and must implement changes. Following this victory, Sweeney announced that the Epic Games Store would soon be available on the Google Play Store.
