Fifteen years after the acclaimed film about Facebook's inception, Aaron Sorkin is returning to the director's chair for a sequel, titled The Social Reckoning, slated for release on October 9, 2026. This time, the iconic role of Mark Zuckerberg will be portrayed by Jeremy Strong, known for his intense performances as Kendall Roy in Succession. Strong's commitment to method acting promises a deep dive into the complexities of Zuckerberg's character. The narrative will not continue directly from where The Social Network concluded; instead, it will focus on the revelations brought forth by Frances Haugen, portrayed by Mikey Madison. Haugen, a former employee at Facebook, gained notoriety in 2021 for leaking a significant cache of internal documents to a Wall Street Journal reporter, played by Jeremy Allen White. Her allegations accused the tech giant of prioritizing profits over user welfare. Among the most shocking claims stemming from Haugen's leaks was the internal research indicating that Instagram posed risks to the mental health of teenage girls. During her Congressional testimony, Haugen asserted that Facebook was "literally fanning ethnic violence" in Ethiopia due to inadequate content moderation for non-English languages. Furthermore, her findings revealed that a staggering 87% of Meta's budget for combating misinformation was directed toward English-language content, even though English speakers constitute only 9% of the platform's user base. Zuckerberg has historically taken issue with The Social Network's portrayal of the company’s beginnings. Earlier this year, he shared his thoughts on the film, recalling a group outing with Facebook employees to watch it. He remarked, "It was weird, man. They got all these very specific details of what I was wearing, or these specific things correct, but then the whole narrative arc around my motivations and all this stuff were like, completely wrong."
