Video from Artemis II flyby of the Moon will not initially look spectacular

In an unprecedented event for humanity, four astronauts are set to witness the Moon up close for the first time in over 50 years. On April 6, aboard the Orion spacecraft, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency's Jeremy Hansen, will embark on a seven-hour journey to observe the Moon's far side—an area that remains perpetually hidden from Earth. As they approach the lunar surface, the crew will come within approximately 4,000 miles (6,400 km) of the Moon, a landmark moment reminiscent of the last close encounter during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. This mission is not just a leap for lunar exploration; it also serves to enhance scientific knowledge regarding lunar geology. However, the excitement surrounding this flyby is set to captivate millions, sparking a wave of inspiration and curiosity. During a recent press briefing, Kelsey Young, NASA’s Artemis science flight operations lead, shared that viewers on Earth can look forward to live video from the spacecraft's solar array wing (SAW) cameras, which are modified GoPro devices positioned on each of the four solar array wings of the Orion. While these cameras will capture some stunning footage, there will be interruptions due to the loss of signal when the spacecraft passes behind the Moon. While the onboard experience will include additional footage from a camera inside the crew cabin, Judd Frieling, the Artemis II ascent flight director, tempered expectations by noting, “Don’t expect high-res video.” He assured that viewers would still be able to catch the action via the SAW cameras, which will provide a nominal low-rate video stream. Given that NASA has been broadcasting in 4K from the International Space Station since 2017, questions arise as to why similar high-definition capabilities aren’t yet available for this lunar mission. As the countdown to this historic flyby continues, anticipation is building for what promises to be a remarkable moment in space exploration.
