US falls below Ukraine in press freedom as global autocracy takes hold

For the first time, more than half of the world's nations are categorized as facing 'difficult' or 'very serious' challenges to press freedom. Despite this alarming trend, the Nordic countries continue to shine as beacons of freedom for journalists. Norway retains its position at the top of the index, marking a decade of dominance. Following closely are Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia, all of which rank among the top ten nations worldwide for press freedom. The report not only highlights the resilience of these Nordic nations but also emphasizes their commitment to human development. The World Happiness Report indicates that Finland ranks first in global happiness, while its neighbors are not far behind. Additionally, they boast some of the highest life expectancies globally. However, the broader picture reveals a concerning decline in press freedoms worldwide. RSF notes that the average score among the 180 countries evaluated has reached an all-time low, signaling a pressing need for renewed focus on safeguarding journalistic freedoms across the globe.
