Star Trek: Starfleet Academytries something different, and I don’t hate it

Fans of the Star Trek universe have reason to celebrate as the first two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have debuted on Paramount+ today. This latest entry into the beloved franchise transports viewers to the late 32nd century, a time set 120 years after the catastrophic burn that brought warp travel to a halt and significantly diminished Starfleet’s operations. With the revival of warp travel—an event chronicled in the last three seasons of Discovery—Starfleet is in the process of rebuilding, which includes the much-anticipated reopening of Starfleet Academy. At the heart of this new series are youthful characters navigating the complexities of life in space. One key figure is Caleb Mir, portrayed by Sandro Rosta, who was torn from his mother during a traumatic encounter with pirates 15 years prior. His mother, played by Tatiana Maslany, was involved in a harrowing situation with a pirate named Nus Braka, a role brought to life by the dynamic Paul Giamatti, who steals the scene with his performance. The series kicks off with a tense moment as Starfleet apprehends Braka and the Mirs. Captain Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter, is faced with the difficult decision of separating the family, sending Mir to become a ward of the Federation and attend school on Bajor. The narrative then jumps ahead 15 years, revealing Ake’s new life as a teacher on Bajor, haunted by her past decisions. Her life takes another turn when Admiral Vance, played by Oder Fehr, approaches her with a proposal to lead the newly reopened Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. With a shift in focus from the War College to the Academy, Starfleet seeks to cultivate a new generation of explorers, setting the stage for potential rivalries and competitions, including a Parrises Squares tournament that promises to challenge the protagonists and engage viewers further.
