Every month, we delve into gaming nostalgia, highlighting classic titles that shaped the industry. This time, we shine a spotlight on a game that was revolutionary for its time—Descent. Launched in 1995, Descent was groundbreaking as the first fully 3D shooter featuring six degrees of freedom, a concept that was unprecedented then. Developed by Parallax Studios and published by Interplay, it quickly became a sensation, selling millions of copies in an era where only a handful of games achieved such success. The game played a crucial role in the shareware distribution model, helping transition gaming from physical media to the digital realm. Notably, Descent holds a special place in the history of GOG, being one of the titles that marked the platform's open beta launch in 2008. However, the game faced a tumultuous journey; by 2015, it mysteriously vanished from GOG due to a fallout over unpaid royalties between the publisher and developer. After a two-year absence, the Descent series made its triumphant return to digital platforms in 2017. The legacy of Parallax Studios is bittersweet. The studio eventually transformed into Volition, known for creating popular titles like the Saints Row series. Unfortunately, Volition's story took a tragic turn when it was acquired by Embracer Group, which gained notoriety for closing down established studios and laying off key industry figures. This marked a sorrowful chapter in the story of a once-renowned development team that brought Descent to life.
