2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA feels like a real car, not a science experiment

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA marks a significant evolution in the automaker's approach to electric vehicles, moving away from the dedicated EQ lineups, such as the EQB, EQC, and EQS. Instead, this model introduces 'vehicles with EQ Technology,' starting with the electric G Wagon and now culminating in the mainstream CLA. This transition is impactful and represents a notable improvement. Having recently tested a prototype, we can now confidently report on the final version. The CLA is set to debut as an electric-first model, with plans for a hybrid variant to follow, built on a cutting-edge 800-volt architecture. This innovative framework will also be featured in other upcoming Mercedes models, including the GLB and GLC, showcasing the brand's commitment to modern automotive technology. The CLA will offer options for one or two electric motors, utilizing a two-speed configuration to enhance both efficiency and performance. The base model delivers an impressive 268 horsepower (200 kW) and 247 lb-ft (335 Nm) of torque, with Mercedes claiming a potential range of up to 792 kilometers on the WLTP cycle. Although the WLTP numbers can be optimistic, it is reasonable to expect that the EPA-rated range could exceed 400 miles, though official figures have yet to be announced. For those seeking enhanced performance, the dual motor all-wheel drive 4Matic version boasts 349 horsepower (260 kW) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque, also featuring the two-speed setup. Mercedes estimates a WLTP range of up to 771 kilometers for this variant, which again suggests a real-world EPA range around 400 miles. Charging capabilities are impressive, with peak DC fast charging reaching 320 kW, allowing the 85 kWh usable lithium-ion battery pack to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. In comparison, the current EQB only supports a peak of 110 kW. However, transitioning to the CLA may present some challenges with its charging connectors. It features a standard SAE J-1772 plug for level 2 charging along with a NACS connector for DC fast charging. This dual setup may require adapters for those switching from other brands, like Tesla, but at least both connectors are conveniently located on the same side of the vehicle.
