2026 Lexus RZ 550e review: Likable, but it needs improvement

Driving a vehicle sometimes feels like a mismatch, and that's how I felt during my initial experience with the original Lexus RZ. As the brand's first all-electric vehicle, my 2023 test drive left much to be desired, even leading me to unfavorable comparisons with the underwhelming Vinfast VF8. Recognizing the need for enhancements, Lexus revamped the RZ for the 2026 model year, introducing upgraded motors, a new battery, and NACS charging capabilities tailored for North American consumers. The entry-level RZ 350e starts at $47,295, while the premium all-wheel-drive RZ 550e F Sport is priced at $58,295. Eager to see how the new model fared, I approached the 550e F Sport with cautious optimism. Despite a few lingering drawbacks, I found myself pleasantly surprised by this electric Lexus. All 2026 RZ models feature enhanced battery systems, and the 550e benefits from a more substantial 77 kWh capacity. Each axle is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, now utilizing advanced silicon carbide electronics to deliver an impressive 402 horsepower (300 kW). The latest design also incorporates additional body stiffening and improved sound insulation. As an F Sport variant, the 550e showcases unique styling enhancements, including new bumpers, a distinctive front grille, and 20-inch wheels that come with aerodynamic covers concealing blue-painted brake calipers. However, the range is limited to 229 miles (369 km) under ideal conditions. During my February test drive in cooler weather, I observed an efficiency of just 2.5 miles/kWh, with the vehicle indicating a mere 88 miles (142 km) of range when the battery was at 50% charge. Charging capabilities have also seen an upgrade, with AC charging peaking at 11 kW, compared to the previous 7 kW. Thanks to its NACS port, the RZ can achieve DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes, according to Lexus.
