2025 Subaru WRX tS review: A scalpel-sharp chassis lets this car dance

The Subaru WRX has long been a symbol of automotive individuality, standing apart with a character that defies conventional expectations. Much like a punk rock band that prioritizes artistry over mainstream acclaim, the WRX embraces its unique identity without concern for outside opinions. With the introduction of the tS variant for 2025, Subaru showcases an evolution of this iconic model, which at first glance may seem like the familiar street fighter we've come to know and love. However, beneath its rugged exterior lies a refined chassis that enhances handling and responsiveness. Subaru markets the tS as a model fine-tuned by its performance division, STI, although it doesn’t represent a full STI return. This distinction is important to note; while the tS captures some of the STI spirit, it doesn’t boast increased horsepower, an oversized rear wing, or the signature pink STI badge. Instead, the enhancements focus on performance hardware. The tS features electronically controlled dampers, stiffer engine mounts, and a reworked steering rack. Additionally, it comes equipped with striking gold Brembo brakes from the WRX TR, boasting six-piston calipers at the front and two-piston units at the rear. Subaru’s engineers aimed not to overhaul the WRX but rather to perfect it. The heart of the tS remains consistent with its predecessor, housing a 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine that generates 271 horsepower (202 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque, delivered through a six-speed manual transmission to the reliable symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The boxer engine maintains its characteristic rumble, ensuring that enthusiasts will appreciate the familiar driving experience. For those mindful of fuel economy, it's worth noting that the tS achieves modest EPA ratings of 19/26/22 city/highway combined MPG (12.4/9/10.7 L/100 km), which may not be the top priority for dedicated WRX fans.
