A banner year for markets in 2025

The year 2025 was marked by significant movements in the financial markets, as the S&P 500 experienced a remarkable 16.39% increase, largely fueled by excitement surrounding artificial intelligence. However, some companies, such as Oracle, faced challenges as the year came to an end. As we kick off the new year, it’s essential to reflect on the pivotal events that shaped the market landscape. Notably, the U.S. launched a military operation in Venezuela, resulting in the overthrow and capture of President Nicolas Maduro, who was indicted on charges related to narco-terrorism. This action stirred uncertainty regarding Venezuela's future, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio seemingly walking back President Trump's assertion that the U.S. would control the country's oil resources. Despite this geopolitical turmoil, analysts predict that energy markets will remain stable in the short term. On the first trading day of 2026, the S&P 500 recorded a slight gain of 0.19%, although it relinquished earlier gains of up to 0.7%. Meanwhile, the pan-European Stoxx 600 climbed by 0.67%, and Britain's FTSE 100 briefly surpassed the 10,000 mark before closing at 9,951.14. In the electric vehicle sector, BYD emerged as the leading seller, surpassing Tesla with 2.26 million battery-powered cars sold in 2025 compared to Tesla's 1.64 million. This shift underscores the growing dominance of Chinese EV manufacturers in the global market. Looking ahead, the U.S. labor market data is set to influence market trends as the nonfarm payrolls report for December is released. Additionally, the upcoming IPO of Elon Musk's SpaceX is anticipated to be a major event in 2026, with reports valuing the company at approximately $1.5 trillion, potentially making it the largest IPO in history, eclipsing Saudi Aramco's record from 2019. Musk has confirmed that plans for this public offering are indeed in progress. As we embark on this new trading year, the financial community remains optimistic and watchful for further developments.
